2025 SUMMER CAMP CORINTHIAN ANNOUNCEMENT  

This November, we had a great group participate in our Junior Mariners Program! Coaches Berkeley Green and Nick Patin took our sailors up and down the bay and even out into the ocean. Our sailors got experience in boats such as the Quest, Zest, and RS 21! 

We can't wait to continue the fun out on the water!

Mater Dei High School and BCYC junior sailor, Tate Christopher, wins the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) Singlehanded National Championship sailed out of St. Petersburg, FL in the ILCAs. It was tight racing throughout the event, and came down to the last three races to secure the victory! In order to compete in this event, Tate had to win our local qualifier down in SD early this September. 

Major congratulations!! Tate is a senior on the MDHS team and will be attending Tulane University in the Fall.

Tate Christopher wins the High School Singlehanded National Championship!

The Mater Dei High School (MDHS) sailing team competed locally out of NHYC over the weekend of Nov 9-10. There were over 32 schools in the gold division coming from all up and down the Pacific Coast! 

MDHS had three teams in the Gold Division, and each finished in the top 10! (2nd, 4th, and 8th) 
Congratulations to a great regatta! The breeze was pretty light both days, and the course was tucked in tight on the bottleneck of Lido, providing difficult starts and must-win lay lines.

MDHS has all 3 teams finish in the top 10 at the Anteater Regatta 

What a great turnout for the 2024 Corinthian Cup! We had 64 sailors registered for the event! When we have over 60 sailors, we like to maximize sailing time by putting on two race courses at once! Our A-C1 sailors raced in the turning basing, and our C2-C3 sailors raced in front of LIYC. 

Saturday provided tricky South/West conditions, and Sunday was a true southerly. The breeze was light and flukey both days until Sunday afternoon when it finally picked up to about 6 - 7 knots.  Each course was able to accomplish eight competitive races for each fleet. Saturday after racing, we enjoyed a fun ice cream social and DJ set by the pool for our racers; what a great bonding opportunity! 

On behalf of BCYC, I would like to give a massive thank you to all of our volunteers who helped to make this regatta possible!  We COULD NOT do this without you. In particular, David Levy, who stepped up to be the Principle Race Officier (PRO) for the C2-C3 Course, and Katie Levy, who did all of our scoring! 

We would also like to thank Ronstan, Dennison Yachts, Ullman Sails, and the Beattie Family for donating items to our Sunday raffle! 

Our BCYC team did great on the water as well! Please give a massive congratulations to our very own Brady Kosich for winning the B class and Keaton Baumhefner for winning the C2 class. Both earned enough honors to move up! Nice work! 

The Corinthian Cup Regatta is unique in that sailors are competing for the Team High-Point Perpetual Trophy in addition to individual low point awards within each class.  

How it works: the Team High-Point combines participation as well as performance to determine an overall winning yacht club.
Each registered Newport-area sailor receives 1 point toward their yacht club team score. Travel teams from the north district (such as LBYC or ABYC) will receive 2 points. Sailors from the South district will receive 3 points per registered sailor.
Top 5 finishers in each class are awarded points based on their final ranking (1st: 10 points, 2nd: 8 points, 3rd: 6 points, 4th: 4 points, 5th: 2 points) in addition to their participation points.

After all was said and done, team BCYC just edged our NHYC by two points to claim victory in the Corinthian Cup Perpetual! Nice work team! We are all so proud of you!

BCYC sailors competed in the 2024 Fall Gold Cup hosted by Newport Harbor Yacht Club over the September 7 - 8 weekend. Our team showed up HUGE, with over 24 sabot sailors in all 5 classes. Saturday proved to be hot and light, where kids were encouraged to hop in the water in between races. Sunday breeze picked up to a nice 10 knots with gusts into the teens! What a great day for racing and a learning opportunity for mastering sail adjustment!

We are excited to have our sailors back on the water for our Fall Friday Sailing! 

Every summer, Newport Harbor Yacht Club comes alive with the excitement and camaraderie of

the Summer Gold Cup. This event offers our sailors an opportunity to get out on the water and

compete with sailors from all over Southern California, which provides valuable racing

experience and teaches life skills such as resilience, teamwork and leadership.

This past weekend, BCYC had 23 sailors compete in the regatta. While Saturday showed

steady breeze, Sunday was a bit more challenging with hotter weather and lighter winds.

Five of our racers made it up onto the podium, one in each class. Emerson Shoemaker took

home 5 th place in A fleet. Olivia Corzine took home 3 nd place in B fleet. Tavin Beattie took home

2 nd place in C1 fleet. Jayden Nahas took home 5th place in C2 fleet. Keaton Baumhefner took

home 4 th place in C3 fleet. Two of our sailors earned the right to move up to the next fleet,

complete with getting tossed into the bay. Congratulations to Olivia Corzine on her move up to

A fleet and Tavin Beattie on his move up to B fleet.

We are so proud of all of the sailors who competed in this event. For our sailors, its more then a

race; its an opportunity to learn, grow and forge lifelong friendships through the sport they love.

SUMMER GOLD CUP - PODIUM FINISHES IN EACH CLASS! 

 BCYC Members and Returning Sailors: March 11th at 10 AM 

We had a clinic on Feb 10 for NB4T C420 sailing out of BCYC. After a slow start at the yacht club waiting for wind, we had nice sailing conditions out of the west with 10-12 knots of breeze. Our main focus of the day was starting with some of the best C420 racers in the country. We raced and battled each other all throughout the day. After today, everyone, including myself, was tired and beat, but we all pulled through and learned/practiced our starting strategies and skills. We focused on reps rather than flashy techniques, and it is evident that it worked. As we go into C420 midwinters next week, starting practices like this one improves all of our strengths as well as weaknesses.

BCYC hosted 67 sailors for the coveted Corinthian Cup, October 14 - 15.   The Corinthian Cup trophy is unique because the regatta perpetual is based off an accumulation of club participation and overall performance

From Team BCYC, we had 20 sailors of the 64 representing proudly!  Conditions treated our sailors well, with the breeze building on Saturday. 

We want to give a big thank you to all our Regatta Volunteers, from the parking lot and launch ramp attendants to our on-the-water race committee! It is impossible to run a regatta without your help, and we are forever grateful!

The next big sabot regatta is the North #2 at Mission Bay Yacht Club! Can't wait!

BCYC sailors took on the breeze at the first stop of the North Series on September 24-25! The Fall Junior Invitational / North #1 at San Diego Yacht Club pushed our sailors to the limit!

A - C1's raced out on the Shelter Island Shoal & the C2 - C3's were right in La Playa Cove. SDYC Race Committee clocked puffs in the 16-knot range, which is the top of what a sabot can handle.

BCYC sailors took on the breeze at the first stop of the North Series!

Over the weekend of Sept 9-10, we had 16 BCYC sailors compete at the Fall Gold Cup.  Congratulations to BCYC's Mesa Uliasz (4th) and Julia Stewart (2nd) for placing in the top 5 of the sabot A Fleet.

Out in the ocean we had 4 sailors compete in the Shadden Series #1 that same weekend. Day one provided a lot of swell and about 9 knots of breeze. Great work to BCYC's Jack McGhie with Isabel Lewis (4th) and Zarrin Harvey with Gillian Kaufman (5th) for placing in the top 5 of the doublehanded CFJ Class!

BCYC Juniors represented exceptionally well at the Balboa Bay Fleet Invitational Regatta by winning the A, B, C1 and C2 sabot fleets.

In A fleet BCYC Juniors Zarrin Harvey and Kingston Keyoung placed first and second respectively.  

In B fleet Emerson Shoemaker took the win, so she will be joining Kingston and Zarrin in A fleet going forward.  

Olivia Corzine took a comfortable win in C1 to move her up into B fleet. 

BCYC sailors Brady Kosich, Tavin Beattie and Elliott Jensen placed first, second and fourth which graduated all three of them to C1 in the 28 boat fleet.

Camp Corinthian started on Monday, June 19, and ends July 28. BCYC had 25 junior sailors that participated in the Summer Gold Cup Regatta, June 24-25, at Newport Harbor Yacht Club. BCYC had a great showing in each sailing class.

BCYC CAMP CORINTHIAN SUMMER PROGRAM June 15 - July 24, 2026

REGISTRATION WILL BE AVAILABLE MARCH 12TH, 2026, FOR SAILORS WHO ARE OR WHOSE FAMILIES HAVE BEEN BCYC MEMBERS FOR MORE THAN 6 MONTHS. 

Our six-week flagship program begins in late June and ends in late July. Running Monday through Friday, classes are offered for kids ages five to 17, incorporating everything from arts and crafts, swim classes, knot tying, and top-level competitive racing around Southern California. The program concludes with the INSA Junior Sabot Nationals.

Classes include the Starfish programs for kids ages five to seven, followed by the Novice program for ages eight+ where kids learn to sail. Next, the sailors progress into the Sabot racing program, where kids compete against other sailors traveling throughout the region, and make their way up through a tiered ranking system based on ability level. Once the sailors master the Sabot, they graduate into the CFJ program as teenagers and learn to race double-handed boats. In addition to CFJs, we offer Club 420 sailboats, which introduces the trapeze and opens the door to the national youth sailing circuit.

All programs emphasize learning, safety, and fun in addition to producing winning results. There is a place for every level of sailor in the Camp Corinthian Junior Sailing Program!

 Eligibility: The Starfish class is offered to children 5 to 7 years of age. This is an introductory class which consists of developmentally appropriate activities such as fundamental sailing knowledge, knot tying, safety, and water-related activities. Weekly activities include sailing a Harbor 20 accompanied by a certified sailing instructor, swim lessons with our certified swimming instructor, arts and crafts, and much more. Credentialed teachers plan a well-rounded curriculum of art activities, gross and fine motor skills development, dramatic play and educational outings. The class introduces Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, prominent features of Balboa Bay, safe water sport and boating practices, and serves as an introduction to the BCYC Junior Sailing Program. 

STARFISH  - Ages 5-7

 Eligibility: The Novice class is an all-encompassing, fun-filled class for children 7-11 years of age in which participants will learn to skipper their own boat. This class is designed for first time sailors, as well as those not yet ready for the Pre-C3 Racing class. Curriculum covers the introduction of the Naples Sabot, boat parts, knots, and on-the-water sailing skills with a heavy focus on the fundamentals of upwind sailing. The goal of this class is to teach kids how to safely operate and learn to love their Sabot. 

SABOT – Novice - Ages 7-11

 Eligibility: The Sabot Intro to Racing option is available to children between 8-13 years of age who have satisfactorily completed the Novice class but are not quite ready to enter the C3 class. Please think of this class as a bridge between Novice & C3. Like C3 this will be a skill-building class, teaching kids how to safely maneuver their boat in basic race-course situations. But, sailors will not be forced straight into competition. Once a sailor feels ready to join the weekly Balboa Bay Fleet races, he or she may elect to move up to C3; however, a sailor may not move back and forth between Intro to Racing & C3. If coming from the Novice class, sailors must satisfy the Novice Graduate criteria to be eligible to enroll in the C3 class.

SABOT - Intro to Racing (Pre/C3) - Ages 8-13

 Eligibility: The Junior Mariner Program is BCYC’s seamanship class open to children from 10-17 years of age with some previous sailing experience recommended, but not required. This course is geared towards junior sailors who are interested in the lifestyle of a mariner beyond racing. Course curriculum will include destination sailing, navigation & orienteering, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, model boat building, knot-tying, STEM education and more.

JUNIOR MARINERS - Ages 10-17

 Eligibility: The Sabot C3 Program is available to children between 8-13 years of age. Sailors who have satisfactorily completed the Novice or Intro to Racing class will enter into the C3 class. This will be a skill-building class, teaching kids how to safely maneuver their boats in basic race-course situations. Sailors will compete in weekly regaTas within the harbor, with opportunities to enter additional regaTas on weekends. Sailors progress to the next level (C2) by winning their class events. Must graduate Sabot Novice to participate. Summer Gold Cup & other local weekend Balboa Bat Fleet regattas are included in tuition.

SABOT – Beginner Racing (C3) - Ages 8-13

 Eligibility: The Intermediate Racing Class is available to children from 9-13 years of age who have moved up beyond the C3 class by winning an eligible regatta. This program is dedicated to sabot sailors who are beyond entry level racing but have not yet mastered their fundamental boat-handling and tactics. These sailors are encouraged to attend Sabot Nationals and for many of them it will be their first Nationals experience. Boat handling, race tactics, course strategy and the Racing Rules of Sailing will be introduced throughout the course of the program. 

SABOT – Intermediate Racing (C2) - Ages 9-13

 Eligibility: The Advanced Racing Class is available to children from 9-17 years of age who have moved up beyond the C2 class by winning an eligible regatta. This program is dedicated to experienced racing sailors working towards a strong performance at Sabot Nationals. Advanced boat handling, race tactics, course strategy, and the Racing Rules of Sailing will be covered extensively. The goal of this class is to produce winning results at the highest levels of youth sabot sailing. Sailors in this program are strongly encouraged to participate in Junior Sabot Nationals. 

SABOT – Advanced Racing (C1 / B / A) - Ages 9-17

 Eligibility: Fridays, for sailors in the Sabot Advanced Racing class that want to take their team racing skills to the next level and compete in the Dick Sweet Team Race series. 

DICK SWEET SABOT TEAM RACE FRIDAY PRACTICE + REGATTA (C1 / B / A)

Classes include the Starfish programs for kids ages five to seven, followed by the Novice program for ages eight+ where kids learn to sail. The Fall Sabot Regattas Supported by BCYC listed below are included for all full program participants; there’s no extra charge.

For additional regattas or sailor's not enrolled in the fall program, regatta charges are as follows: 


*The $80-100 regatta coaching fee applies only to sailors who are not enrolled in the full fall program but would like to join BCYC coaching for a specific weekend regatta. One day regattas will be $40-50 respectively.

Families registering more than one sailor will receive 10% off each additional sibling’s registration.

The Junior Mariners class is open to children from 9-14 years of age, with some previous sailing experience recommended but not required. There will be three five week sessions, Fall Session 1, Fall Session 2, and a Winter Session. Course curriculum will include destination sailing, dinghy sailing, navigation and orienteering, kayaking, knots and splicing, powerboat handling, STEM education, and more. Class participants must own a United States Coast Guard (U.S.C.G.) approved life jacket fit for their daily use. Boat Charter Fee is included in the tuition.  ~THERE WILL BE A MAX CAPACITY OF 12 SAILORS ~

Junior Members enjoy full access to the club waterfront and lower level facilities, access to club boats and equipment outside of program hours, as well as member pricing for all programs. Junior Members will also receive a member number which can be used to purchase food/drinks in the Columbia Room and for payment of any program-related tuition, regattas or fees.  Parents of Junior Members have full access to the club during junior events. Applications are available through the Junior Sailing Director or the BCYC Front Desk. If interested in a Junior Membership and would like more information, please contact Debbie Dunne, Membership Assistant, at (949) 644-9530 x 24.

BCYC Spring Sailing Program

Class hours: Friday 3:30pm - 6:30pm | 8 Dates

Join us for weekly sailing practice after school on Fridays & fun Junior Mariner sailing on Saturdays. Beginner to advanced ability levels are welcome! This program is designed to keep our sailors engaged in the sport during the off-season & prepare for weekend regattas.

Coming up on October 12-13 is the BCYC Corinthian Cup! The Corinthian Cup Regatta is unique in that sailors are competing for the Team High-Point Perpetual Trophy in addition to individual low point awards within each class.
